AID Learning 2.0 - 18 Things

Listed below are 18 Things (or small exercises) that you can do on the web to explore and expand your knowledge of the Internet and Web 2.0.
(There are 5 additional, optional exercises which were part of the original 23 things program).

This program will commence on Monday 1st October and run for nine weeks until Friday 3oth November.

(Note: Links to detailed information about each task are all activated. You may work ahead if you wish)

Week 1 & 2 : Introduction, Registration & Blogging (official start October 1st)
1. Register your participation in the Learning 2.0 Program by sending an email with your name, Department and email to the following email address learning@yprl.vic.gov.au

2. Set up your own blog & add your first post.

3. Register your blog on by sending your name, blog name and URL of your blog to the following email address learning@yprl.vic.gov.au

Week 3: Wikis
4. Learn about wikis and discover some innovative ways that libraries are using them.
5. Explore, edit and add material to the PBWiki Sandbox or the SLV Desk Wiki. Existing SLV teams may like to create and experiment with their own wikis at PBWiki or Zoho Wiki.

Week 4: RSS & Newsreaders
6. Learn about RSS feeds using Google reader.
7. Locate a few useful library related blogs using other feeders and create RSS feeds from databases.

Week 5: Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati
8. Learn about tagging and discover Del.icio.us (a social bookmaking site)
9. Explore Technorati and learn how tags work with blog posts.
Optional: Take a look at Library Thing and catalog some of your favorite books.

Week 6: Photos & Images
10. Explore Flickr and learn about this popular image hosting site.
11. Have some Flickr fun and discover some Flickr mashups & 3rd party sites.
Optional: Play around with an online image generator

Week 7: Online Applications, Tools and Technology
12. Take a look at some online productivity (word processing, spreadsheet) tools.
13. Create a blog post about anything technology related that interests you this week.
14. Explore sites from the Web 2.0 awards lists and write a blog post about your findings.

Week 8: Podcasts, Video & Downloadable audio
15. Discover YouTube and other sites that allow users to upload and share videos.
16. Discover some useful search tools for locating podcasts.
Optional: Take a look at the downloadable audio book titles available on World ebook Fair Site

Week 9: Web 2.0 and conclusions
17. Read a few perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of libraries and blog your thoughts.
18. Summarize your thoughts about this program on your blog.
Optional: Roll your own search tool with Rollyo.

* The SLV Learning 2.0 program is a modified program based on the original Learning 2.0 - 23 things created by Helene Blowers from PLCMC.
Note: This project is loosely based upon the website 43Things (which allows you to set and track personal goals) and the Stephen Abram article titled 43 Things I (or You) might want to do this year (Information Outlook - Feb 2006).
